New water strategy good for gardening

21/02/2008

The HTA has welcomed 'Future Water' The Government`s Strategy for Water in England. In particular it notes that Government is to change householders` permitted development rights to allow them to pave over their front garden without planning permission only if the surface is porous, such as by using permeable paving

or gravel. Legislation will be introduced with the effect of requiring planning permission for impermeable surfaces in front gardens in 2008.

Commenting on the announcement, HTA Director General David Gwyther said, "We are delighted that Government has decided to take this action. We raised this issue with the Secretary of State, Hilary Benn, when we met him late last year to discuss our 'Greening the UK' Strategy. This statement clearly shows that he listened and has now acted."

HTA`s overall Strategy is aimed at using the planning system to protect existing planted areas, particularly private gardens, whilst encouraging planners to demand

more green planting in commercial and domestic building developments. HTA is already in dialogue with Local Authorities and Planning Officers to take this further forward.
